"One of the Best Things I鈥檝e Ever Done": Gabrielle Leahy Reflects on Her Concordia Internship

Thursday 31 July

It鈥檚 not often an internship is described as life-changing, but for university student Gabrielle Leahy, her time at Concordia 香蕉视频直播 College has been just that. As she wraps up her final week, Gabby reflects on the experiences that shaped her, the people who welcomed her, and the strong sense of belonging she felt throughout her time with the College鈥檚 Marketing and Communications team.

鈥淭his is my last week. My last day will be Friday, and it鈥檚 definitely bittersweet,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檒l be focusing on the final stretch of my degree, which finishes at the end of August, and then I鈥檓 open to whatever comes next.鈥

Over the past two months, Gabby has worked across a range of projects from content creation and social media to photography, videography and writing for the College website. She has played an active role in day-to-day communications while also contributing to longer-term initiatives that will continue to roll out after her departure.

鈥淚鈥檝e been lucky to be part of so many things. One highlight was photographing the Track and Field Carnival at the end of Term 2. That was a lot of fun.鈥

More than just a placement requirement, this internship became a meaningful chapter in Gabby鈥檚 professional journey. From the very beginning, she felt part of the team.

鈥淔rom the moment I walked through the reception doors and was greeted by Claire, I felt supported. The team involved me in strategic discussions, shared their experience, and made me feel genuinely included. Even something as simple as sitting together at lunch helped me feel welcome.鈥

Working within a school environment for the first time came with a few surprises. Gabby quickly noticed the level of dedication among staff and how deeply involved everyone was in the life of the College.

鈥淓veryone contributes something meaningful here. It鈥檚 not just a workplace. It鈥檚 a community where every person makes an impact. That鈥檚 rare.鈥

It didn鈥檛 take long for Gabby to see what makes Concordia different.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a real 鈥楥oncordia difference鈥. Whether it鈥檚 the students or the staff, there鈥檚 a passion for the everyday moments. People here care. It鈥檚 clear this is a place that offers something special.鈥

She describes the College culture as open, welcoming and inclusive, all values that align with Concordia鈥檚 broader commitment to academic excellence and student wellbeing.

鈥淣o matter who you are, or what you know (or don鈥檛 know), there is always space for you here. I honestly feel like I鈥檒l always be welcomed back.鈥

There were plenty of professional highlights, but Gabby says one of her favourite parts of the week was the Friday staff morning teas.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the small things like that which make you feel like part of the team.鈥

As she prepares to move on, Gabby says her time at Concordia has left a lasting impact.

鈥淚鈥檝e learned so much, especially how to think more strategically about communications. There are so many moving parts you don鈥檛 notice from the outside, but the team here thinks of it all. It鈥檚 really inspiring.鈥

In her final week, it鈥檚 been the positive feedback from staff that has meant the most.

鈥淗earing people say that I鈥檝e made a real contribution to the College means so much. Those warm-and-fuzzy moments really stick with you.鈥

Belinda Sanders, Director of Communications, says Gabby brought more than just talent to the team, she brought a fresh perspective and enthusiasm that made a difference.

鈥淕abby has been an absolute asset to our team,鈥 Belinda said. 鈥淪he approaches everything with curiosity, positivity and a real willingness to learn. It鈥檚 been a joy to have her at Concordia, and I have no doubt she鈥檒l go on to do great things.鈥

To future interns, Gabby offers this advice: 鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to be wrong. Concordia is one of the safest, most supportive learning environments I鈥檝e ever experienced. It鈥檚 the perfect place to grow.鈥

And to the wider Concordia community, she shares a heartfelt thank you.

鈥淭hank you to everyone who gave me a smile, helped me when I got lost on campus, or made me feel welcome. It鈥檚 meant a lot.鈥

As for summing up her time at Concordia in just one sentence?

鈥淥ne of the best things I鈥檝e ever done.鈥
